The Brother XV8550D is the second-generation THE Dream Machine sewing, quilting and embroidery combination model. Brother USA documents a 9.5 x 14 inch maximum embroidery area, 726 built-in sewing stitch selections, a 10.1 inch display and 982 built-in embroidery designs, while current Brother accessory pages also list the exact model for the SA156 bobbin and several specialty feet.
XV8550D and XV8500D differences
The XV8550D is not just an alternate spelling of the original Dream Machine. Brother presents it as THE Dream Machine 2 and gives it later features such as Color Sort and revised scanning and positioning functions.
Brother's own design count is inconsistent
Brother USA currently lists 982 built-in embroidery designs. Brother Canada's current English product page also shows 982 in its specification summary, but lower on that same page it still states 939 built-in designs, and the French page repeats 939. That is an official-source conflict, not a reason to choose whichever number is more convenient.
Built-in Disney designs have a usage restriction
Brother's current support answer explicitly includes the XV8550D among machines with built-in Disney designs and says those pre-programmed Disney patterns are for personal, private use rather than commercial resale. That is a model-specific operating limitation worth keeping separate from ordinary accessory compatibility.
